THE PROSTATE’S ENEMY HAS BEEN FOUND!
Headlines love a single villain: one food, one drink, one “toxin”. Ordinary weeks do not work like that. The prostate, the bladder and sleep share blood flow, hormones and habit. What you do on Tuesday at 15:00 matters more than a superfood you bought once in October.
This is a field guide for a man who still has a job, a family braai and a phone that does not put itself down. Not a clinic protocol.
Three boring levers
Hours. Caffeine has a half-life of several hours. A 16:30 cappuccino is still in the system at 22:00. Alcohol at 21:00 tells the kidneys to ignore the night. Fluid after 20:00 is a vote for 02:00.
Salt and sitting. Biltong is a national treasure and a sodium bomb. Long sitting in a car or at a desk slows pelvic circulation. Neither is a moral failure. Both are adjustable.
Short training. Pelvic-floor work is not a gym personality. Eight slow squeezes on a chair, twice a day, beat a heroic Saturday that never happens. If it hurts, stop.
The plate without a diet religion
Twice a week: fish or a proper portion of oily fish if you can get it. Daily: tomato, olive oil, a handful of pumpkin seeds or walnuts. Less processed meat after dusk. Fruit is fine; a two-litre bottle of juice is still sugar and volume. Rooibos in the evening if you want a mug without caffeine. Green tea belongs in the afternoon, with the UroVania Herbal Blend, not as a nightcap.
You do not need an imported powder. You need fewer late chips and a walk after lunch, even around the parking lot.
What products are for
A trainer is a metronome, not a surgeon. A herbal mug is a substitute for the third coffee, not a drug. Patches are a skin ritual, not a diagnosis. If blood appears, if the stream is a thread for months, if you lose weight without trying — book a GP. Bring the week of notes from the night-waking article.
A South African week, sketched
- Monday: last coffee 15:00, bottle empty by 17:30, ten-minute walk after lunch.
- Wednesday: two sets on the trainer while the news is on. No extra resistance “to feel it”.
- Friday: if there is beer, start earlier, stop earlier. Nuts, not a family bag of chips.
- Saturday braai: meat, salad, less sauce from a bottle. Water with the first two hours, not only with dessert.
- Sunday: bed on time. The Monday alarm is part of prostate hygiene whether that sounds ridiculous or not.
What “men’s health” is not on this site
It is not a testosterone advert. It is not a promise that pumpkin seeds replace a urologist. It is not a ranking of superfoods. It is hours, salt, sitting, a short set on a chair, and a plate that already likes the heart. The prostate shares the bloodstream. That is why the grocery list looks like a heart list. Boring is the point.
Headlines that name a single villain — one oil, one “toxin”, one imported berry — sell clicks. Ordinary weeks are a pile of Tuesdays. Tuesday at 15:00 is the last coffee. Tuesday at 13:10 is a walk around the parking lot. Tuesday at 20:00 is not a family bag of chips. Repeat. That is the method.
Desk, car, sofa: three places the week leaks
The N1, the M3, a Sandton basement, a Cape Town open-plan floor — they all flex the hips and starve the pelvis of variety. Stand once an hour. Stairs after parking. Ten minutes when you put the keys down. Then eight slow squeezes if you use a trainer. Circulation first. The longer argument is in the sitting essay. Do not invent a gym personality on Sunday to cancel forty hours of sitting. The Sunday gym will not happen. The hourly stand can.
How to use the shop without turning it into a religion
Order one thing that matches the hole in the week. No 16:00 coffee replacement? Herbal Blend. No metronome for the chair set? Trainer. Want a cosmetic night ritual with a leaflet? Patches. After supper, ordinary rooibos from the kitchen if you still want a mug — not the afternoon blend, which has green tea. Do not buy all three because a page listed them. Do not expect a parcel to fix blood in the urine. Pay on delivery, read the leaflet, stop if it hurts or itches. That is the whole commercial relationship.
If money is tight, start with the clock and the salt before you start with a box. The articles are free. The GP is not a shop upsell.
A month, not a weekend of guilt
Week one: caffeine by 15:00, fluids mostly by 17:00, notes at night. Week two: salt after 18:00 quieter; beer earlier if it exists. Week three: walking after lunch plus the chair set. Week four: look at the pad. If nights improved, keep the skeleton. If they did not, you have a month of data for a booking. Guilt is not a biomarker. The pad is.
Monday coffee to Sunday lights: the week in full sentences
Monday is the day people “start again”. Start at 07:00 with water and a plate, not with a vow. Last coffee 15:00. Bottle on the desk. Walk after lunch, even if the walk is a basement loop. Home: keys down, ten minutes of movement, chair set if you use the trainer. Dinner without a second processed meat. Phone off the pillow. Bed near the hour you will keep on Tuesday.
Tuesday copies Monday. That is the method. Wednesday is a good day for the second chair set if Monday’s felt easy — still the lightest dial, still no pain. Thursday tempts sport or a “quick one”. Keep the coffee early. Finish any recovery drink before 17:30. Friday drinks follow the beer essay: earlier, with food, or not on a week you already wake twice. Saturday is the fire. Sunday is the return. The Monday alarm is part of the same hygiene whether that sounds ridiculous or not.
If you travel for work Monday to Wednesday, the week is still hours. Hotel kettle is not a 21:00 litre. Minibar is salt. Corridor walk after you drop the bag. Notes on the phone if the pad stayed at home.
The plate in a South African shop, without a diet church
You already know the list because the heart lists it: tomato, olive oil, fish when you can, nuts, pumpkin seeds, vegetables that actually appear on the table, fruit not a two-litre juice. Pap, potato, rice and bread at lunch are not the enemy. The second sausage at 21:00 is. Packet gravy is salt. Bottled sauce is salt. Yellow cheese to the series is salt. None of this requires an imported powder.
Twice a week, fish or a tin of sardines if fresh fish is a story you tell and do not buy. Daily, something red from a tomato. A handful of seeds is a handful, not a bag you eat like biltong. Rooibos after supper if you want a mug. Green tea and the Herbal Blend belong in the afternoon. The recipes are three kitchen ideas, not a meal plan you fail on day four.
Braai culture is not cancelled. Daylight salt, water from the first hour, beer earlier, leftover meat not at midnight — that is the week’s plate wearing weekend clothes. Read salt and biltong if Saturday is the loud night.
Sitting is a health habit whether you like the sentence or not
Eight hours of hip flexion is a posture. Stand every hour. Stairs after parking. Ten minutes when the keys go down. Then eight slow squeezes. Circulation first, sling second. The N1 will not change. The hourly stand can. Working from home is not automatically healthier; the chair becomes the whole day. Shoes at lunch, walk to the gate. Details in the sitting essay.
Do not invent a gym personality on Sunday to cancel forty hours of sitting. The Sunday gym will not happen. The two-minute stand after a 50-minute meeting can.
Money, time and the order of operations
If money is tight, start with the clock and the salt. The articles are free. The pad is free. The walk after lunch is free. A GP is not a shop upsell and is still the right spend if nights stay loud. If you buy one object, buy the one that matches the hole: metronome, afternoon mug, or a cosmetic patch ritual. Pay on delivery. Read the leaflet. Stop if it hurts or itches.
Time is the scarcer thing. Ten minutes at home beats a one-hour plan you postpone. The chair set is eight repetitions, not a programme. The mug replaces a coffee you already had time to make. The patch is a sticker, not a second career.
Family history, age brackets and what this site will not pretend
Over 50, or 45 with prostate cancers in the family, a conversation with a GP about screening is a clinical conversation. This site will not order a PSA and will not tell you to skip one. Bring the week of notes so the visit is not only “I read something”. Blood, a thread-like stream for months, unexplained weight loss — booking, not a stronger tea.
“Men’s health” on billboards often means testosterone adverts and a villain oil. Here it means hours, salt, sitting, a short set, a plate the heart already likes. The prostate shares the bloodstream. Boring is the point. Headlines that promise a melted belly overnight are not this week. This week is Tuesday at 15:00.
How a month looks when you actually write it down
Week one: caffeine and fluids. Week two: salt and beer hours. Week three: walking plus the chair set. Week four: read the pad. Improved nights — keep the skeleton. Unchanged nights — book with the page in your hand. Mixed nights — look at which evenings had a braai, a late coffee, a short sleep. Mixed is still data.
Do not change four levers on the same Monday. You will not know which one mattered. Do not add a powder in week two “to help the tea”. Do not double the trainer dial because week one felt easy. Light, boring, written down.
What to tell a friend who sends you a headline
Send them this page or the night-waking essay, not a product link first. Ask what time they drink coffee. Ask about biltong after dark. Ask how many times they stand up. If they have blood or a stream like a thread, tell them to book, not to brew. If they want a mug instead of a third coffee, the blend is there. If they want a countable squeeze, the trainer is there. If they want a ritual sticker, the patches are there. The friend still needs a clock. You cannot courier a clock. You can send a checklist.
The hours nobody puts on a wellness poster
06:10 in the bathroom. 06:35 coffee. 07:00 already late. 10:15 a bun from the foyer. 12:40 lunch at the keyboard. 15:50 the machine. 18:20 the N1. 19:10 keys. 19:25 leftover meat standing up. 21:00 a series and a packet. 22:40 phone on the pillow. That is a week even when you “care about health”. The levers are not a new identity. They are 15:00, 17:00, a walk after lunch, salt after 18:00, a chair set, a similar bedtime. Write them on the pad. The poster can wait.
If this list makes you angry, good. Anger at traffic is accurate. Anger at a gland you have not had examined is premature. Fix the hours you control. Book the hours you cannot diagnose.
Fish, tomato, seeds — again, because people skip the grocery list
Twice a week: fish, or a tin if the counter is a story you tell. Daily: tomato in some form — fresh, tinned, a stew, on eggs. Olive oil on vegetables, not a bottle of creamy sauce. A handful of pumpkin seeds or walnuts, not a bag you eat like biltong. Fruit, not a two-litre juice. Pap or potato at lunch is allowed. The second sausage at 21:00 is the line. None of this is imported. None of it is a powder. If money is tight, tinned fish and tomato and eggs do more than a box you cannot afford this month.
Braai Saturday can still be meat and fire. Daylight salt, water from the first hour, beer earlier, leftover meat not at midnight. That is the grocery list wearing weekend clothes. If you only cook once a week, cook a tomato stew that lasts two lunches. The prostate does not need a chef. It shares a bloodstream with a heart that already had this list.
How to talk to a GP without sounding like a website
Do not open with a brand. Open with: I get up N times. The stream is weak or full. Last coffee is this hour. I drink alcohol these evenings. I take these tablets at this hour. I sit this many hours. I snore, or I do not know. Here is a page of nights. Then stop talking. Let them ask. If they want a PSA, a urine test, a referral, that is their work. If they want you to move a water tablet to the morning, that is their work. Your work was the notes.
If the first visit is dismissed as “just age”, you can still ask what would make them look again: blood, a thread for months, family history, three times a night for weeks. You are not required to buy a tea because the visit was short. You are required not to invent a diagnosis in the car park.
What “consistency” means when you have a job
Four evenings out of seven on the clock is a month that can change. Seven perfect evenings and a collapse on Saturday is a Saturday you should write down, not a reason to quit. Consistency is the pad, not a streak app. If you travel, hotel corridor walks count. If you host, your own last sip still has an hour. If you get sick, stop the trainer, keep fluids sensible, see a person if you need to. Wellness is not a sport you win.
The shop is optional. The clock is not, if night waking is the complaint and a clinician has not given you a different story. Read the night-waking essay if 02:00 is the only sentence you care about. Read sitting if the day is a chair. Read food if the braai is the sentence. Use one page this week, not five tabs.
Read next: traffic and sitting, everyday food, the shop.
