Everyday food
Men’s-health leaflets repeat the same grocery list because it is also a heart list: plants, olive oil, fish, nuts, less processed meat. The prostate shares the bloodstream. There is no secret fruit from a late-night advert.
Put on the table
- Tomato, cooked or raw, most days.
- Olive oil on vegetables instead of a bottled creamy sauce.
- Pumpkin seeds or walnuts as a planned handful, not a flavoured party mix.
- Fish twice a week if you can. Eggs on the other days.
- Rooibos in the evening. Green tea or Herbal Blend in the afternoon only.
Move later or make smaller
- Biltong: lunch, not extra time.
- Chips and packet snacks: daylight, or skip.
- Sugary cold drinks: they are fluid plus a bladder irritant for some men.
- Late braai sauces: taste the meat, do not drown it.
Volume still counts
Soup, juice and beer are drinks even when they look like food. Count them in the 80% by 17:00 rule if night waking is the complaint. Recipes: eggs and seeds, lemon and oil, nut bowl.
A South African plate without a diet religion
Pap, potato, rice or bread at lunch is fine. The problem is the second sausage and the bottled sauce at 21:00, not the starch. Tomato stew, a tin of fish, a handful of pumpkin seeds, olive oil on vegetables — that is grocery-store food, not an imported powder. Rooibos after supper. Herbal Blend only in the afternoon because of green tea. Fruit is fine; a two-litre bottle of juice is sugar and volume before 09:00.
If you braai twice a week, keep the fire. Move biltong to daylight. Put a jug of water on the table from the start. Taste the meat; do not drown it. None of this treats a gland. It is the same list a heart leaflet already gave you.
What “zinc from seeds” is not
A tablespoon of pumpkin seeds is a habit, not a lab result. Do not swallow a sports-shop zinc bottle because a headline mentioned the prostate. If a clinician orders a blood test, that is their job. The kitchen’s job is a plate you can repeat on a Wednesday.
